In Louisiana, a burglary is committed when you enter a building or residence without permission for the purpose of committing a crime therein. Ordinarily, we think of a burglary as when someone breaks into a store at night to steal something. But suppose you get mad at your neighbor, bust into his house without permission and punch him in the nose. You may believe that you have only committed the relatively minor crimes of trespassing and simple battery. In fact, your actions fit the definition of burglary, which carries a maximum sentence of up to 12 years in prison so think before you act.
